Good-Bye Andre!

Colleagues sadly said good-bye to Andre who has been with Khanya for almost 10 years. During the first few years he served in the capacity of implementation project manager in the Overberg region and later took on the responsibility of coordinating the ICT Implementation Project Managers.

Fortunately Andre will not be very far away, because he will be joining one of Khanya’s partners, IT Crimes.

The Khanya Team will miss you, Andre!

A Broken Foot Can’t Stop Pam!

Pam broke her foot almost a month ago and since then has been working faithfully from home, keeping in contact with the office via e-mail. She cannot drive her car with her foot wrapped up in bandages.

But yesterday Pam graced us with her presence at our monthly management meeting. She assured us that within the next few weeks she will be back on both legs, keeping us company here in the office again.

Khanya Shines in US Congressional Recognition

Khanya and Oude Molen Academy of Science and Technology were awarded a Congressional Award from Congresswoman Diane E Watson of California USA, in honour of the innovative work they are doing to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Individual Congressional certificates were awarded to Kobus van Wyk and Ingrid Graham of Khanya and Tony Marshall, Jackie Brits and Piet Boshoff of Oude Molen.

In November 2009 an MOU was signed between Oude Molen and Foshay Learning Centre and Global NetGeneration of Youth, SMART Technologies, Sesame Workshop, and Khanya Project. These partners committed to designing and implementing collaborative programs which include educator and student exchange, and joint educational activities. Together, international partners will implement programs that inspire youth as the next generation of explorers, scientists, engineers, innovators, and ambassadors shaping a positive future.  The Sister School Partnership has also received a grant from the USA State Department, which will allow educator and student exchanges in 2011. Four other schools, two from the USA and one each from Uganda and Zambia are also grant recipients and have joined the Community of Practice too. The South African partners will host a strategic planning meeting with African and US participants and Advisors early in 2011. Attendees at the Awards ceremony watched a virtual presentation from Astronaut Leyland Melvin entitled “Living Your Dreams”.  It was in inspirational message to the youth in the Community of Practice that they too could reach for the stars as they witnessed his Space Walk. SMART Technologies and VastraTech presented Oude Molen with another SMART interactive whiteboard and data projector in appreciation of their commitment to the Project.

Cavalleria Benefits from Donor

Hurshele Carolissen had only been at Cavalleria a few weeks when Ingrid Graham introduced him to Brenda Isaac Founder of the One Love Learning Foundation (OLLF). Brenda was looking for an underprivileged school to complete the trinity OLLF will support. The mission of the One Love Learning Foundation is: Loving and empowering children by providing them with the tools to satisfy their basic human needs while facilitating communication with other children around the world to eliminate cultural barriers and fear.

Within a few months a sizeable vegetable and fruit garden has been planted. First crops harvested have made for a tasty addition to the feeding scheme provided by WCED. International partners and donors provided marimba equipment and a media centre with Skype facilities. Cavalleria is able to communicate with Dobbs Elementary School in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and Anchovy primary in Jamaica.

“A whole new world has opened up for our children, through this partnership. They see that there is more beyond the borders of Scottsdene and one day we hope they will each realise their dreams in reaching out to share with others too.”  Says Hurshele.
